    I’ve made a friend through a friend of my mother’s. My mom and her mom met through a skiing group for people with disabilities. I am disabled and so is her mother. We lived about 45 minutes’ drive away from each other but we spent as much time  together as possible. We even went to summer camps together. This was often a challenge given that she was able-bodied while I was not. I went to YMCA and Girl Scout camps with her for able-bodied kids. A lot of time there were activities I just couldn’t keep up with or sometimes I wasn’t able to participate in at all. A couple of summers I also tried attending summer camps for kids with disabilities. But I felt terribly bored and found that I wasn’t getting enough physical activities. One year we signed up for the Girl Scout camp together again. Someone put me in with the younger kids thinking it would give me more opportunities. My friend stayed with me and the young ones. We were both uncomfortable due to the fact that we were the only girls in our group able to do many things. There was a big sister pro-gram and we were even older than our big sisters! I will never forget what this friend did for me by sticking with me through the whole two weeks. Not only did she stick with me but she did everything she could to make it more fun. I don’t know if she had any idea how much her efforts meant to me then or how much they still mean. To me what she did was what a true friend does.
