1． Globally,China is by far the leading food fish producer providing over 64 percent of the total world production from aquaculture.Chinese aquatic fish production ranks second only to pork production in providing food for human consumption.Carp is the most prevalent species of food fish in the world.Raised largely in China,carp totals about half of the world’s fish production.Most of the other leading countries in aquaculture production are Asian where fish make up a higher percentage of the human diet than other areas of the world.Although U.S.aquaculture is a relatively young industry and represents only about 2 percent of world production,it currently ranks eighth largest in the world.U.S.aquaculture production increased to about 500 metric tons in the year 2000 or almost 21 percent higher than in 1995.About 100 species of aquatic organisms are produced through cultured practices in the United States.
2． In China,the first batch of bay scallops were introduced from Virginia in 1982 which reproduced successfully in the following year and has eventually developed into one of the biggest bivalve culture industries in the world.In 2006,the annual production of bay scallops reached about 300,000 tons.Since 1982,several more introductions of bay scallops were carried out in hope to improve the production and reduce mortality of the bay scallops.Up to 2001,at least three geographical populations with different origins existed in northern China.Despite these efforts,mass mortality still occurred frequently and in some regions almost all stocks died.Another major concern is that the final size of the scallops at harvest is becoming smaller,resulting in low-valued products.
