1.Suppose you have recently completed hiring a new worker through a long choosing process. The person you chose scored 96 out of 100 on the test,he’s been in the industry for more than 10 years, and you negotiated a pay rate that is slightly higher than average for your shop.It has been four weeks since he was hired,so far so good.
Then you get another resume via e-mail.This guy had seen the ad but had been happily working in a local shop — until the shop went bankrupt. The guy has a decent resume,so you call him in for an interview. He scores a 100 out of 100 on the test, completing it in half the time of the guy you hired. He went to a highly respected local woodworking college, the same place one of your best current employees went, and he graduated top of his class. He has a good range of skills, including some that the guy you hired does not have. His past employers speak well of him,and he’s asking for 20 percent less money than the guy you just hired.
Would you fire the first guy and bring in the second?
2.Suppose you have three workers we’ll call A,B,and C.A is a recent immigrant (with green card) who never completed high school and speaks adequate English.B is a couple of years out of college, and this is his second job in the industry.C has been in the industry for more than 15 years and has a lot of experience with different shops. In other words, these three have very different resumes. On the shop floor they perform the same tasks at the same rate and produce work of the same (high) quality. When hired, these three negotiated very different starting salaries.
Would you pay them the same rate now?
3.Suppose you had an outside salesman who concentrated on a very specialized market. When times were good,he produced more than half your sales. But then his market tanked, and you didn’t get much from him for a period of more than a year.In the meantime, you found other ways to make sales and now you have a steady stream of profitable work. The salesman calls you to tell you he’s found a job that will keep your shop busy for a month.
But if you take this job,you will have to turn down work from your existing clientele and pay the salesman 10 percent of the gross. You are confident that you can book the shop for that same month with other work if you need to,but you won’t know for sure for some months in the future. On the other hand,if you generate your own work, you don’t have to pay the 10 percent commission. It’s not possible to double your production for a single month, nor is it possible to outsource either his work or yours. So what do you do?
