Nowadays, some people think that computers, especially computers with Internet access will replace the traditional schools. You can watch tutorials or lectures on computers. You can ask questions and find answers online. You can also search for all kinds of resources online. Even if you need to communicate with a real person, you can use the online chatting systems such as MSN, Yahoo messenger, China's QQ, the new Google Talk or many other programs to see and hear, besides texting, each other from distance. Not to mention there are many programs specialized in online learning or distance education. So, why do you need to make daily trips to schools and sit in classrooms?
There is no doubt that computers are valuable and will become even more valuable and important in education. They open up a wide world that's not limited by the four walls of classrooms. Talking about the Great Wall, or the West Lake, or the highest mountain in the world? You are no longer limited to the texts and your imagination, or the limited resource collection from your school, computers can take you to them throught the Internet. Interested about the world of intects, the outer space, or what was it like in pre-history? You are sure to find some images or videos to expand your knowledge about them. Let alone the lessons and tutors you can get because of computers and the Internet.
However, this does not mean the traditional schools will no longer be necessary. You need a teacher's guidance about what to learn and how to learn. Surrounding yourself with teachers and students will easily get you more motivated about and concentrate on learning. Physically being at school and in a classroom gives you the real sense of being a student. Discussion is the easiest and most effective when it is done face-to-face. A fellow student's help and friendship is more direct and usually more keenly felt. These are some of the advantages of traditional schools which can hardly be replaced by online or distance learning.
Therefore, as we believe comptuers and associated information technologies will afford more learning opportunities and greatly expand the possibility of education, traditional schools will still have their own places, but inevitably with some transformation which is enabled by technology.
