猎户座主体由参宿四和参宿七等4颗亮星组成一个大四边形.在四边形中央有3颗排成一直线的亮星,设想为系在猎人腰上的腰带,另外在这3颗星下面,又有3颗小星,它们是挂在腰带上的剑.整个形象就像一个雄赳赳站着的猎人,昂着挺胸,十分壮观.
猎户座最佳观测日期为十二月上旬至四月上旬.出现时自东南方升起,经天顶后由西南方落下.猎户座α 及 β 极亮,在一般无云的夜空即可轻易见到,但由于冬季夜空亮星颇多要辨认出猎户座还须其它星补助 .
