The best known quality of the British is "reserve"(内向,矜持).A reserved person does not talk very much to strangers (陌生人)or show their feelings. You may work with him for years without even knowing where he lives and how many children he has. If they are on a train with a stranger they may travel many miles without starting a conversation. If a conversation does start questions like "How old are you?" or even "What is your name?" are not easily asked. But they may be quite happy when a friendly stranger or foreigner breaks the barrier (障石尋)down. Moreover people of the North and West are much less reserved than those of the South and East. The British are also famous for their English modesty. They are not less proud than anybody else but self-praise is felt to be impolite. If a person is very good at tennis and someone asks him if he is a good player he will seldom reply "Yes". He may give an answer like "I'm not bad" or "Well I'm very fond of tennis". The English sense of humour is also well known. "He has no sense of humour" is often heard inEngland. A sense of humour is an attitude (态度)to life. They have the ability to laugh at themselves when they fail or make mistakes. But they do not laugh at disabled or unlucky persons. Finally sportsmanship (体育精神)is also an important quality of the British. Football tennis and many other sports were all first organized and given rules inBritain. Sportsmanship is the ability to obey the rules when they practise a sport while also keep generous and calm when they lose the game. Moreover sportsmanship is also shown in British life.
