NEW YORK\\x0d(AP) — In a report the Pew Internet and American Life Project said 47 percent\\x0dof U.S. adult Internet users have looked for information about themselves\\x0dthrough Google or another search engine.
\\x0d\\x0dThat is\\x0dmore than twice the 22 percent of users who did in 2002 but Pew senior\\x0dresearch specialist Mary Madden was surprised that the growth wasn’t higher\\x0dthan it had been expected.
\\x0d\\x0d“Yes it’s doubled but it’s still the\\x0dcase that there’s a big chunk of Internet users who have never done this simple\\x0dact of connecting their names with search engines ” she said. “Certainly more\\x0dand more people have become aware of this but I don’t know it’s necessarily\\x0dkept pace with the amount of content we post about ourselves or what others\\x0dpost about us.”
\\x0d\\x0dAbout 60\\x0dpercent of Internet users said they aren’t worried about the extent of\\x0dinformation about themselves online although they are increasingly concerned\\x0dover how that data can be used.
\\x0d\\x0dAmericans\\x0dunder 50 and those with more education and income were more likely to\\x0dself-Google---in some cases because their jobs demand a certain online persona(形象).
\\x0d\\x0dMeanwhile \\x0dPew found that 53 percent of adult Internet users admit to looking up\\x0dinformation about someone else famous people not included.
\\x0d\\x0dOften it’s to find someone they’ve lost\\x0dtouch with. But looking up information about friends relatives colleagues and\\x0dneighbors also was common.
\\x0d\\x0dAlthough\\x0dmen and women equally searched for online information about themselves women\\x0dwere slightly more likely to look up information about someone they are dating.
\\x0d\\x0dIn many cases the search is not\\x0dharmful done to find someone’s contact information. But a third of those who\\x0dhave conducted searches on others have looked for public records such as\\x0dbankruptcies(破产) and\\x0ddivorce proceedings. A similar number have searched for someone else’s photo.
\\x0d\\x0dPew also found that teens were more\\x0dlikely than adults to limit the range of people who can see their information\\x0dat an online hangout like Facebook or News Corp.’s MySpace contrary to\\x0dconventional wisdom.
\\x0d\\x0d“Teens are more comfortable with the\\x0dapplications in some ways (but) I also think they have their parents and teachers\\x0dtelling them to be very careful about what they post and who they share it\\x0dwith ” Madden said.
