答案和解析
Food is important to health at all stages of life. Healthy diets help children grow, develop and do well in school. They enable people of all ages to work productively and feel their best.
Healthy food also can help to reduce the risk for chronic diseases, such as heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes and stroke, which are leading causes of death and disability.
Foods contain nutrients . These nutrients are essential because the body cannot make them and must obtain them from food. Essential nutrients include vitamins, minerals, certain amino acids and certain fatty acids. Foods also contain other components such as fiber that are important for health.
No single food can supply all nutrients in the amounts people need. For example, oranges provide vitamin C but no vitamin B12; cheese provides vitamin B12 but no vitamin C. So people should eat different foods to maintain the balance of nutrients.
The carbohydrates , fats and proteins in food supply energy, which is measured in calories . Foods that are high in fat are also high in calories.
Calorie needs vary by age and level of activity. Many older adults need less food, in part due to decreased activity. People who are trying to lose weight need to select more nutrient-dense foods in order to meet their nutrient and calorie needs.
New research says thirty-five percent of all child deaths worldwide are caused by under nutrition —hunger. The Lancet, the British medical magazine, just published a series of five studies. The answer, they suggest, is greater investment in nutritional services and improvements to health systems. Robert Black from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland is the lead author of the series. He says more than two million children die from underdevelopment, either before or after birth, or from starvation because of lack of food. Millions of others who survive face a life-time of disabilities or early death. And the effects are not just physical. Poor brain development from poor nutrition can limit economic success as children become adults. Then the cycle of poverty1 and undernutrition often repeats itself with the next generation.Doctor Black says undernourished2 children are also more likely to have diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes3 and heart disease when they become adults. He says that nutrition programs need to place greater importance on the first two years of life. Undernourished children can suffer permanent4 damage by the age of two.The researchers say mothers should be urged to breastfeed and taught how to breastfeed correctly. Also, diets should include foods rich in vitamin A and the mineral zinc5. The researchers say early intervention like these could reduce child deaths by twenty-five percent.Undernutrition is one form of malnutrition6, but malnutrition can also mean eating too much. The Lancet series on mother and child nutrition has faced some criticism. The international group Doctors Without Borders praised the series for their calling for greater attention to the issue. But the medical help group says the researchers underestimate the number of child deaths from malnutrition. They believe that more children than the reported number die from malnutrition. If you include organic foods in your holiday menu, you are in step with the latest food trends, according to a recent survey. You may also be doing your children’s health a favor. Parents who feed their children organic foods can substantially lower the levels of pesticideresidues1, according to a new study.Even before the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s "organic"seal2 went into effect last October, which certifies foods grown free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers3, Alexandra Ramdin decided to give organic foods a try."No one had proven that organic food is healthier or more nutritious," said Ramdin, a Seattle mother of two daughters aged 2 and 5. "But I decided not to doubt the benefit of organic foods."Now, having enrolled in a study that tested children to determine whether organic foods reduced their exposure to pesticides, Ramdin is even more certain about her choice. She and a neighbor, whose family eats a conventional diet, were among 40 families who kept food diaries of their children for three days, then collected their kids’urine4 for analysis. The study by re-searchers at the University of Washington concluded that children fed a diet of organic foods were exposed to far fewer —six to nine times less —poisonous pesticides than children fed a conventional diet. "Buying organic foods makes me feel good," says Ramdin. "But it’s great to hear that there are real differences between chemicals my children were exposed to."
