Ever wondered (想知道) what space smells like? Scientists say it’s like fried steak (煎牛排) and hot metal (金属).
Steven Pearce is a chemist and expert in perfume (香水) making. He is trying to copy the smell of space in a lab to help NASA (美国宇航局) with their astronaut training.
Pearce said that they have a few ideas about what space smells like.
“First of all, there are the interviews with astronauts. The astronauts had done spacewalks and returned to the space station. When they took off their space suits and helmets (头盔), they said they had smelled some special odors (气味).
“The smell is of fried steak, hot metal and even welding (焊接) a motorbike,” said Pearce.
His research will be used to help astronauts get ready for the conditions (情况) they meet in space.
“NASA is trying to make conditions that are like real space for their astronaut training. They train the astronauts by putting them in big water tanks to make it seem as if there is no gravity (重力). Now, with the special odors of space, the training can be more real.”
Pearce began to work for NASA in August. He has produced the smell of fried steak, but producing the smell of hot metal is more difficult. He hopes to finish the job by the end of the year.
