Since I am studying in a university with a broad education and I benefit from learning about many different subjects, I am for a broad university education.
In today’s society, nobody can truly achieve success with just one skill or one specific field of knowledge. The development of the society is in need of as many as versatile people. University students, as the great builders of the future society that is fully progressed, should develop in all dimensions. While a broad university education can help broaden the students’ horizons and lay the foundation for them to get all-round development.
One may also find that there are an increasing number of interdisciplinary courses in the university study. With overlapping of different but relevant disciplines, a student is unlikely to confine himself inside a specific field. The advent of more interdisciplinary courses is also an indicator that a broad learning is becoming important.
While for students, through learning about many different subjects, they can find out which field they are most interested in. There are large numbers of university students majoring the courses that don’t interest them. As a result, they always don’t go to classes, give up assignments, and do bad in exams. But if they can finally choose a major that they are interested in after learning about a variety of fields, the situation will be much better, I think.
In my university, students can choose classes of other colleges and departments besides classes of their own colleges. And I always meet with students from outside our colleges in our compulsory classes and some of them really do a good job in the subject. So, as far as I’m concerned, a broad university education in which students learn about many different subjects can really help the students and promote the progress of the society in the long run.
