Fuel is a consideration - we can fire on natural gas or diesel oil,or a combination.The combination is designed to be able to vary the heat input for a particular flame temp,but we have never got it to work.
I think much consideration is needed before a calciner is installed.CED put one up in USA,which never worked satisfactorily,understand they offered it to us in the Hepworth days,they then built a second Kiln at Gore identical to the first,Hoben built the kiln at Brassington,and it was a long time before it produced satisfactorily,the refractories fell out several times I understand,and if they wish a good conversion throughput is much reduced.It was suggested they were going to sue the manufacturer Reid Hammer,for failure to meet the agreed process performance.Obviously I have come by the CED and Hoben info second hand.
