A Mailman’s Problem
Chen Da was a mil-man.
Five days a week he rode his bicycle from village to village delivering letters.
He knew everybody and everybody knew him.
“Here comes Cheng Da,” the children called,and their parents came to the doors of their houses.Everybody liked Cheng Da,and of course everyone especially liked getting letters.
“Something for you today,” Cheng Da would call and he would get off his bicycle and take a letter or a package out of the bag.
Or he would say,“Sorry,nothing for you today,” and ride on.
Even the dogs knew and liked Cheng Da,and although they barked at strangers,they never barked at him.
Except for one dog.Its owner,Mrs.Lin,had not lived in the village for many weeks,and every time the dog saw Cheng Da it started barking.
When he came to Mrs.Lin’s house,Cheng Da rode his bicycle faster.There were never any letters for her so he did not have to stop.
Then one day,there was a letter for her.Cheng Da stopped his bicycle some way form Mrs.Lin’s house.The dog started barking.Mrs.Lin came to the door.
“A letter for you!” Cheng Da shouted.
“Why can’t you bring it to me?” Mrs.Lin shouted back.
“What about your dog?” Cheng Da said.“I don’t want it to bite me.”
Mrs.Lin laughed.“Don’t be frightened,” she said.“Everyone knows the old saying:A barking dog never bites.”
“You know the old saying,and I know it,” Cheng Da said,“but how do you know that your dog knows it?”
Breaking the News
A very old lady won a million dollars in a lottery.Her son and his wife heard the news on the radio.
“How are we going to tell your mother?” the wife asked.“The shock might kill her!”
“That’s true,” the son said,“Perhaps we’d better speak to her doctor about it.He’ll know how to break the news to her gently.”
They explained the situation to the old lady’s doctor.
“I’m glad you told me,” he said.“A shock,even a happy one,could give her a heart attack.Leave it to me.I’ll find a way of breaking the news to her.”
He thought about the problem for several days,then decided what he would say.
He called on the old lady and sat by her bedside.He took her hand in his.
“Let’s play a game,my dear,” he said.“A ‘Let’s Pretend’ game.”
“Good.I’ll ask you a question first,” the doctor said.“Then you can ask me one.”
He pretended to think for a few moments.Then he said,“Tell me,what would you do if you won a million dollars in the lottery?”
“Oh,that’s an easy one,” the old lady said.“I’d give most of it to you,doctor,because you have been so good to me all these years.Doctor!”
But the doctor was now lying on the floor.He had died of shock.
