With the approach of the 2008 Olympic Games, the government of Beijing has decided to rebuild part of Beijing City. This aroused a heated discussion among citizens on whether the cultural in Beijing should be protected or not.
40% of the citizens don’t agree to protect the cultural relics, because they think the transportation will be greatly improved if the low old buildings are pulled down and the narrow roads are widened. Meanwhile, the people’s living conditions will also be improved. On the other hand, 60% of the citizens think the government should protect the cultural relics in order to attract the tourists from both home and abroad. Besides, they also believe that pulling down the ancient architecture will destroy the original landscape, for example, the water resources may be affected as a result of it.
In my opinion, the government ought to set up some special zones for the cultural relics and make laws to stop people from building high rises near them, because they are part of the history of Beijing and worth well protecting.
