I used to think of university education as an ivory tower (象牙塔) where everything is associated with truth,goodness,and beauty.I was so surprised and disappointed when I first discovered a classmate of mine cheating in an examination.I was surprised because I never thought that a person who was receiving higher education should fall into the pit of cheating.I was disappointed because the university campus had been unfortunately polluted.Now as dishonest behavior has become so common on campus today,the serious academic pollution has almost shattered my dream of the pure ivory tower.
No solutions can be found if we do not analyze the causes of cheating.To begin with,some students have little self-confidence.They have poor attitude towards study and turn to cheating as the only way to survive a course.Secondly,there are so many pressures from society.In such a knowledge-based economy,a good record of study at school is the only apple in the eye of both teachers and parents,and the only key to the door of most companies.Last but not least,parents have not shouldered their responsibility in setting up a good example for their children.It is not unusual that when a child cheats on an exam,his parents get shocked.Yet he keeps hearing his parents talking about cheating on income taxes.This inconsistency drives children crazy.
Confronted with such a serious problem,what shall we do?First of all,schools and universities should make it clear that any cheating behavior will be severely punished with no exceptions.Moreover,teachers of all subjects and parents should work hard to restore honesty by speaking and behaving sincerely and truthfully.Finally,we,young students should be aware of our obligations and view integrity and honesty as the condition for upright and responsible citizens.
Since university campus can never be separated from society,social issues are necessarily reflected in education.However,I firmly believe that truth,goodness and beauty will certainly conquer falsehood,evil and ugliness.With our joint efforts,the tower of education can,and will,be made as pure as we wish it to be.
