Have you heard about the story The North Wind and the Sun? What do you know about a north wind? A north wind is a cold wind. It’s a common weather phonomenon(现象)is the northern part of China in winter.

When a weather reporter says there is a north wind he means the direction from which the wind is coming. This is true of any wind from any direction. A north wind blows from the north toward the south. This does not mean the wind is coming directed from the north pole of course.

In fact neither a north wind nor a south wind blows straight(直地)from one direction to the next. Because of the Coriolis Effect(地球自转偏向力) winds change their directions with the earth’s turning from the west to the east. In the northern hemisphere(北半球) winds blowing from the north are deflected to the right as they travel south. In the southern hemisphere winds moving from the south are deflected to the left.

When the north wind blows in this is often a sign of changing seasons to colder weather in the northern hemisphere. Those who live in the northern hemisphere may say that they can “feel it in their bones” when winter is coming. They can feel the differences in pressure(气压)changes as well as temperature changes. Often as autumn is on its way the sky becomes clearer. Though the days may be warm still the nights get cooler and the north wind blows in a new season.
