On the Differences and Similarities Between Chomsky's and Hyme's Language Teaching Theory
During the past decades linguists, psychologist, and educationalists have been involved in a continuing debate on how language can be taught. The language teachers' emphasis on teaching has changed over the dacades with the new theories been brought out.
1.Introduction
Among many schools of language teaching theories, the characteristic feature of Bloomfieldian and neo-Bloomfieldian American structuralism was its careful concern to restic itself to the study of form, and the classification of the form of the language, without reference to the categories of meaning.Linguistics was almostly exclusively emphasis on the study of language structure. Then,in the late fifties,Chomsky published his Syntactic Structure, bring about the transformational generative grammar. The transformational theory of grammar does in deed represent a revolution in the aims of linguistic study. From henceforth linguistics became concerned with developing system of rules and structures of language. However, this model of teaching nolonger satisfatory for language teacher because it put less emphasis on the meaning. Then Hymes'paper "On Communicative Compentence" published. It brings light on the acquisition of the communicative compentence during the precedure of langauage teaching. The following discussion will mainly focus on the differences and similarities between the language teaching theory of Chomsky and that of Hymes'.
2.Chomsky's Teaching Theories
Chomsky revolutionized linguistics and introduced a theory known as transformational grammar. In his book Syntactic Structure he introduced the theory, and in his Aspects of the Theory of Syntax he modified the model.Chomsky's views of both language and language teaching have been highly infulential in the study of foreign language teaching.
Concerned about language teaching,Chomsky argues:
Linguistic theory is concerned primarily with an ideal speaker-listener,in a completely homogeneous speech community, who knows its language perfectly and is unaffected by such gramatically irrelevant conditions as memory limitions, distractions, shifts of attention and interest, and errors (random or characteristic)in applying his knowledge of language in actual performance.
In his statement Chomsky made a distinction between grammatical competence, the knowledge processed by the idealized native speaker, and performance, referring to the actual linguistic data.According to Chomsky, linguistic competence can be seen as an innate biological function of the mind that allows individuals to produce the indefinitely large set of sentences that constitutes their language.
