　　② This is just as well as there used to be an eighty percent failure rate among potential guide dogs in the early days． However we need to realize that a guide dog is more than the product of just special training． Nowadays a breeding programme ensures the suitability of the supply of dogs which have the right physical and temperamental qualities． A good guide dog needs sensitivity adaptability good voice response some initiative and willingness to please． Crosses between Labradors and golden retrievers account for around half the dogs． Pure Labradors account for roughly a third while German shepherds and pure golden retrievers each contribute ten percent．

　　③ Most people are unaware of the long training process． When they are about six weeks old the puppies go to live with volunteer families and are taught to be clean and obey the basic com-mands like “sit” “down” and “come”． They visit busy places and learn to conquer their fear of loud noises mad works and busy crowds and to control their natural liveliness． By the end of heir nine or ten-month stay they have acquired the three Cs-confidence concentration and calmness-and are ready to start their training at one of the seven centers．
