第一篇:
A:The history of insurance in Britain is a long one.In the early days there was a lot of marine trade between Britain and India and America. So at that time,in the 16th century, people were insuring their cargo ships.
B:So the first kind of insurance was marine insurance?
A:Yes.Then in 1666 there was the Great Fire of London. Before then there were no fire brigades, but after the Great Fire, insurance companies employed their own fire brigades to protect the buildings they insured.
B:How did people take out insurance?
A:Well, the people who sell insurance are called underwriters, because they write their names under their promise to pay.In the 18th century, customers and underwriters used to arrange insurance in a coffee house which belonged to a man called Lloyd.Today Lloyd’s is the name of a famous insurance market in London.
A:So if I want to insure a ship today,I must go to Lloyd’s?
B:No.You go to an insurance broker. The broker then goes to Lloyd’s and arranges insurance for you with the underwriters who will give you cheapest price.
第二篇:Bruce Stevens of Harbour Imports Pty.Melbourne,Australia, wanted to pay Peter Weaver of Cloth Co Ltd,Manchester,U.K.for some cloth.Bruce wrote to his bank on a special from and asked them to open an irrevocable documentary credit. This is a Letter of Credit from Bruce’s bank guaranteeing payment in Britain at a later date.If it is irrevocable,it cannot be cancelled.Neither Bruce nor his bank can change their minds and refuse to pay.Peter’s bank knows Bruce’s bank very well and they know they will receive the money,so they confirmed the Letter of Credit. This means that they guaranteed to pay the money so Peter was sure he would be paid. However a Letter of Credit is not negotiable,so Peter had to wait until the Letter of Credit was paid before he received his money.
