Statistically, international trade can be described as a small share of U.S.economy.For example, less than 8% of the goods and services used by Americans in 1993 were imported. However, these imports added up to nearly $ 97 billion, and they included much of the oil and many of the metals and raw materials needed to run the country’s economy. They also included many of the foods (bananas, coffee, chocolate, and tea) and many of the cheaper consumer goods (from toys and shirts to motorcycles, electronic equipment, and small cars) needed to keep the cost of living under control.
