Today I read Tennessee Williams’s script,The Glass Menagerie.After reading this,I start to know the complication steps in a stage play.In fact,writing a play is not easy for writers.However,in The Glass Menagerie,Tennessee Williams successfully describes very detail for the play.At the end of The Glass Menagerie,Amanda says to Tom,“You live in a dream; you manufacture illusions (1131).” In fact,all those three characters in the play are living in their dream.Today I will discuss about these three characters in The Glass Menagerie.
In Amanda’s opinion,she wants to pursue better life.However,because she married with a man and her husband already left to other place.She has not opportunities to pursue her up-level life.Now she is old and not attractive to men any more.Therefore,she hopes her daughter can attract a good and rich person to marry.When she talks to Laura,she just wants her daughter Laura to meet a lot of people for her future life.Then she can have an upper level life.On the other hand,she wants her son can always stay at home because she worried if Tom would leave home like his father.Therefore,she gives a lot of pressure on Tom.In Tom’s mind,she controls Tom’s life and she always tells Tom what should do.She doesn’t allow Tom to express his feeling in the family.Her words,such as “You are going to listen (1097)”,”You are no condition (1097)”,shout at Tom.Because she wants Tom to support their family,she doesn’t let Tom do things without earning money.
