In old China, people usually used four different words to describe the universe systems in Chinese mythology: Kun(昆) and Xi(昔); Dan(旦) and Hun(昏).
To begin, Kun and Xi are the words whose discribe the Vertical Systems of universe by sun. Let's take a look of this two words. First, the word Kun(昆) is made by two parts, Ri(日) at top, and Bi(比) at bottom. The word Ri(日) means sun; the word Bi(比) means two people standing together in Ancient Chinese. Clearly. the word Kun means the sun at the top of the people. Xi(昔) is also made by two parts. The word Ri(日), which means sun, is at the bottom part. The top part of Xi means water. Ancient Chinese thought that the sun goes under water so it disappear, and the night began.That shows the meaning of the word Xi,which means the sun is under the water. As you can see, Kun and Xi shows the sun at the top and bottom, ancient Chinese use those two word to mark the Vertical Systems of universe.
In addition, Dan and Hun are another two words that ancient Chineses use to describe the universe system. Again, let's take a look. Dan(旦) and Hun(昏) also have the word Ri(日) which means sun inside. Easy to see, Dan(旦) is a sun which is just get out of horizon. It states the meaning of Dan -- the rising sun. Where or what direction does the sun rise began? The answer, of course, is East. Hun(昏), in the Oracle, means sunset. In modern Chinese, Hun means the begining of the dark. Where or what direction does the sunset happen? The answer, with no question, is West. If we think that horizon is a horizontal line, then Dan and Hun were the two points at the end of horizon, which definitely shows the two oppsite directions.
