Born into a wealthy family in Poland in 1473,Nicolaus Copernicus lived in a time when people still believed everything moved around the earth.His father died when he was ten and his uncle brought him up.In 1496,Copernicus went to Italy,where he spent the following 10 years studying law and medicine and some other subjects in several universities until he came back to his homeland in 1506.
Through his years of observations and mathematical calculations,he completed his great book,On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Bodies,in which he held the view that the planets move around the sun.The book is now regarded as the starting point of modern astronomy.
