这张图片拍摄于加纳的阿克拉地区，每年有数吨重的电子垃圾从发达国家经海运倾倒至这里。当地贫困儿童的唯一乐趣就是将这些电子垃圾拆卸或烧毁。有些孩子才8岁左右，就这样毫无安全保障地将裸露于重金属和有毒烟雾中。这些电子垃圾不但严重损害了当地儿童的健康，还对当地的河流及土壤造成严重污染。绿色和平组织的科学家去年对阿克拉地区的水样和土壤样品进行提样检测后发现，提取的样品中铅、镉、砷、二恶英、呋喃、多氯联苯等有毒物质严重超标。
这种场景不仅仅只在加纳可以看到，在世界各地的发展中国家中同样也可以发现。这些国家包括尼日利亚、越南、印度、菲律宾等。据联合国相关资料显示，每年发达国家在世界范围内倾倒的电子垃圾达5000万吨之巨，其中的绝大部分倾倒在发展中国家和不发达国家。比如，在德国旧货市场上购买一个二手的CRT(阴极射线管)显示器需要5.3美元，而在加纳仅需2.2美元即可购得。
