Fifty years ago, China was still a very poor country. After three consecutive years of natural disaster, many people died of hunger and many others were dying of poverty. In the 1960s, the former Soviet Union stopped all its help to us. So Chairman Mao said that we Chinese must have a spirit of self-reliance and hard struggle.
At that time, there were usually 3 to 5 children in a family. The elder brothers and elder sisters must help the parents to take care of the younger brothers and sisters. The good side of this family structure is that kids had playmates. They wouldn’t feel lonely. But they didn’t have enough food to eat. As a result there were fights among the children.
Usually the eldest could have new clothes. When they grew up, the clothes were given to the second eldest child, then to the third.
At that time, there were no TV sets, to say nothing of computers. Rich families might have a radio. By listening to the radio, they got the news, stories, and learned to sing some songs. In one word, life was much harder and simpler.
