Competition and Cooperation

Competition and cooperation exist everywhere, and are the main theme in all business areas. From as broad as the relationship between countries to as narrow as the ties between classmates, these are commonly seen as daily events.

Competition is an action that the parties involved to deliver their best in order to outdo a task and win the top award. It needs a fierce desire and dedication to strive for an exclusive success. During the course of competing, the desire will push the parties to their best performance and therefore winning the best records, such as a new product with the highest quality. On the other hand, it is likely to end up in a situation in which one party to be the winner at the cost of the other’s losing, for example, the bankruptcy of the opponents, to which it is called a win-lose situation, and mathematically it should be: 1 + 1 < 2.

Cooperation is a process in which the involved parties helping each other, and sharing technical know-how, the markets, and resources, to create a situation in which the parties can coexist without malignant competitions. It allows them to overcome own deficiencies by learning from others’ strong points, and eventually let all to be benefited. Not only the experiences in success to be shared, but also the failures to be learned as the valuable lessons to avoid future pitfalls, to which it is called a win-win situation, and mathematically it should be: 1 + 1 > 2.

Driven by the desire to win, the competition is unavoidable, but better outcome is also possible with cooperation. We have to take a just view to them, as without competition there would be no driving force for progress, and without cooperation there would be no stability but relentless struggles. We all want to be the champion of the class, yet it is more desirable if everyone can advance through the friendly support. To conclude, we need competition as a driving force in our studies, and we need more cooperation as a bond to ensure a harmonious learning environment.
