禅,在日本孕育了茶道,“茶禅一味”是由村田珠光首先悟出的.村田珠光11岁到奈良称名寺出家,20岁时因厌倦了出家生活而还俗,此后的10年四处漂泊.30岁时到京都投在当时著名的禅宗僧人一休宗纯门下习“禅”.一日,珠光用自己心爱的茶碗点茶,一休突然从旁边用铁如意棒击碎了他的茶碗.珠光不动声色地说了声“柳绿树红”.对此,一休予以高度赞赏,并在去世前将自己珍藏的圜悟克勤的墨迹传给了他.珠光将这幅不可多得的墨宝挂在自家茶室的壁龛上,终日对此思悟禅与茶的关系,终于悟出“佛法存于茶汤之中”的道理.这便是“茶禅一味”思想的先河.
茶与茶道的结合,固然由僧人是茶文化传播者这种客观的历史背景,但茶与禅在精神上的内在联系应当说是更为重要.这种现象并不是日本所特有的.中国禅宗也有相应的十分生动的例证.唐代赵州从谂禅师问一位外来的僧人是否到过他这里,对方说曾经到过,他便吩咐:“吃茶去!”某日又一位僧人来到,赵州同样问他是否来过,对方回答没有来过,他也吩咐:“吃茶去!”站在一旁的院主深感不解,问赵州为什么来过的和没来过的都要去吃茶,于是赵州便喊了一声:“院主,吃茶去!”僧人待客以茶,似乎并不仅仅是以茶解渴,其中另有深意.日本的茶道脱胎与禅这以母体,茶道理念中的“和敬清寂”就是禅所要达到的理想境地,也是禅僧的墨迹以及书法创作的最高追求.在茶人们那里,茶道过程的一举一动无非是茶理的自然流露.在这个意义上,茶道就是禅的生活化.
