Some people argue whether good students should sit next to poor students has caused a heated-debate. I suppose it's quite a wise decision.
First off, students are social animals, who are aware of the importance of cooperation. For this reason, better students can help poor students to make progress on studies. Also, the whole class can benefit from this studying pattern which is asking a relatively good student to sit next a poor student. Furthermore, this method will make the aura of class-learning more competitive.
On the other hand, there could be some backfire that either students or teachers don't want to see. For instance, poor students can negatively influence good students' academic performances. However, as long as students are determined and earnest, it is definitely not a concern.
To summarize, I do hope this studying patter will motivate more students to participate in it.
