众大臣纷纷上前观看,但没有一个能够说出答案来.这时,一位白发苍苍的老臣上前说：“陛下,我能辨出哪个是最珍贵的.”玄宗大喜,说：“老爱卿,请说.”那老大臣说：“容老臣看个仔细”.
老臣走上前去,从口袋中取出一根丝线,从第一个金人的一个耳朵穿进,结果,丝线从另一个耳朵穿出.丝线从第二个金人的一个耳朵穿进,结果丝线从口中穿出.在试第三个时,丝线从耳口穿进,却掉进了肚中.
那老臣便说：“陛下这第三个丝线掉进肚中的便是最珍贵的.”外国使者一听,惊异地说：“对,对,这第三个金人便是最珍贵的,贵国真是人才济济呀!”
原来那三个金人便代表世俗中的三种人,一种是对别人的话左耳进,右耳出,根本不知倾听；一种是从耳朵听进,便从口中说出；只有第三种人懂得倾听,又知道沉默,所以说第三个金人便是最珍贵的了.
