Olympic spirit

The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. Since then, every four years a magnificent international sports meet has been held in different cities in various continents.
During the Olympic Games, there have always been some excellent athletes who can win great honors for their motherlands. Nevertheless, their fame is not simply built on how many gold medals they have won but their unusual personality that has shown the Olympic spirit.
Two years ago when I was watching a gymnastic match in the 2004 Olympic Games, I was greatly moved by a Russian gymnast called Nemov.
During his competition on the single bar, his performance was almost perfect — except for only one mistake. All his action on the bar was incredibly remarkable.
When he finished his match, all the spectators thought that Nemov would win the gold medal without any doubt. However, the result made them stand up to protest against the judges. The whole gym was filled with their hisses.
Although the spectators protested angrily for over five minutes, the judges still announced that the scores couldn’t be changed.
At that time, Nemov did not say anything though he felt extremely upset because he only ranked fifth out of all the eight competitors, despite his wonderful performance. On the contrary, he stood up with a smile and made a sign to the spectators to lower their voices. He seemed completely to have accepted the harsh reality. When he sat down, all the spectators gave him warm applause.
From his reaction to the accidental confusion, people were truly moved by Nemov’s great personality. He had shown what a real champion is: not only a master in sports but a calm and persistent personality that showed the Olympic spirit.
