Bo th of the mountains were very high. Just to the north of the mountains liv ed an old man called Yu Gong who was nearly 90 years old. With the two high m ountains just in front of his house, his fa mily and he had to walk a long way arou nd the mountains whenever they had so mething to do on the other side of the m ountains. One day, Yu Gong called all his fami ly together to talk about how to move th e two mountains to other places. His wif e said, "An old man like you cannot even move a small hill, not to mention the tw o high mountains. Even if you can, wher e can you throw so much earth and ston e?" "the Bohai Sea is big enough to cont ain all the earth and stone," Yu Gong sai d. So it was decided. His children start ed to dig the mountains, led by the old man Yu Gong. A man named Zhi Sou saw them wo rking and tried to stop them, saying, "Yo u are so silly! You're so old and weak tha t you can't even take away the grass and trees. How can you move the high moun tains?" "You're wrong," Yu Gong said with a sigh. "Look, my sons can continue my wo rk after my death. When my sons die, m y grandchildren will continue. So generat ions after generations, there's no end. B ut the mountains can't grow higher. Do y ou still say I can ’t move them away?" Later the Heaven God, upon learnin g of Yu Gong’s story, was GREatly moved.
