Jean Driscoll was born to be an athlete (运动员).
Being born with a problem in her spine (脊柱) did not stop her. In fact Driscoll has won the wheelchair division (轮椅组) of the Boston Marathon seven times. She has also won medals in shorter races at the Olympics and the Paralympics.

A young girl’s dream

As a child Driscoll had to wear crutches (拐杖) to help her walk. However she enjoyed sports with other kids and taught herself to ride a bike. When Driscoll was 14 she fell off her bike and hurt her hip (臀部). After that she had to use a wheelchair.

At first Driscoll was afraid that being in a wheelchair meant stopping sports. Then a friend talked her about wheelchair soccer. Driscoll became interested in it and loved it. By the time she went to college Driscoll was a good athlete in wheelchair sports such as soccer tennis basketball and ice hockey.       

Years of walking with crutches gave Driscoll a strong upper body (上肢). She trains hard six days a week. In the gym Driscoll lifts 200-pound weights almost twice her body weight.

Outdoors Driscoll moves along the road in her chair for 40 kilometres without stopping. She trains to climb hills by having three people hold on to the back of her chair.

Driscoll also uses a special wheelchair. It helps her reach about 26 kilometres an hour.

Today Jean Driscoll is still a top athlete. She also travels around the country giving talks to motivate kids to do their best. You can guess what she tells her audiences “Dream big and work hard.”
