As usual it was time to work on a project and Mr Loke announced that each student must find a partner to work with.Lenny tried to ask Jean but she had already paired up with Joan and before she knew it,she was left staring at Zhong Jie.
Seeing Lenny looking quite lost and Zhong Jie sitting quietly on her own,Mr Loke immediately paired Lenny with Zhong Jie.Lenny made small little protests but what choice did she have?So she tried talking to Zhong Jie but all she got from him was a silent nod.
So she sat next to him all the time with the nagging feeling that her project would be a disaster.Why?Everyone knows that Zhong Jie hardly speaks more than five words and is the most passive student in class.Nobody knows anything about him and since he hardly interacts with anyone,the rest of the class just leaves him alone.
Mr Loke had started to explain details of the project to the class.Each group was to bring some recycled materials from their homes and use the creative techniques they had learnt to make a prototype product.The prototype must be completed in 2 weeks time and each group must do a presentation to explain their product.Mr Loke said that a competition would be held to choose the most convincing product.
So Lenny asked Zhong Jie to meet and after much probing and waiting for Zhong Jie’s answer,they finally decided to meet on Friday afternoon after class.At the meeting,Lenny suggested a number of ideas and drew some of them on a piece of paper.Then she asked for his suggestions but all she got was a lost look from him.About to lose her temper,she asked,“Are you following me so far?Do you know what we are required to produce?” Then as quickly as she had finished her questions,she followed with more,“Can you speak up,please?I am not talking to myself!”.Then as she was about to get up and go……
